Resilient Healthcare

The Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI)

The Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) is a research-intensive institute located at Macquarie University, Sydney. Founded by director Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite  in 2007, AIHI is part of the rapidly growing Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. AIHI conducts world-class translational research relevant to national and international research communities, governments, policymakers, providers of health services, managers, clinicians, patients and the community. The work underpins healthcare reforms and systems improvement and provides new technologies, perspectives and evidence.

The AIHI comprises three centres: the Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS); the Centre for Health Informatics (CHI); and the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research (CHSSR). Each of the Centres contributes to the Institute’s common mission and vision, however research on resilience engineering is conducted predominantly within CHRIS.

CHRIS is led by Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite who, along with Professors Erik Hollnagel and Bob Wears and a range of international collaborators, developed the field of Resilience Health Care nearly a decade ago. Within CHRIS, Dr Robyn Clay-Williams leads a research stream on Human Factors and Resilience in the healthcare setting, adopting evidence and translating this into practice to improve delivery systems and design new models of care for healthcare systems of the future.

AIHI hosts the Resilient Health Care Network website. The purpose of the Resilient Health Care Net (RHCN) is to facilitate the interaction and collaboration among people who are interested in Resilient Health Care – practitioners and researchers alike. This includes discussions; establishing a web presence; exchange of views, opinions, and ideas; mutual moral and scientific support; collaboration on papers and projects; exchange visits; and the organisation of various events ranging from local informal workshops to international summer schools. RHCN has held annual meetings since 2012 –  scientific presentations from past meetings can be found on the website. Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, Dr Robyn Clay-Williams and others at AIHI have published a large body of work on Resilient Health Care, including six books, numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, and conference presentations and posters.
